Can You Cover an Extension Cord With Leaves or Mulch?
No. It is tempting to hide the orange cord snaking across the yard under a pile of leaves or a layer of mulch, but a covered cord is a fire risk for two separate reasons. A cord carrying current gives off heat, and it is rated to run in open air where that heat can escape. Bury it and the heat builds instead of dissipating. On top of that, a cover hides any nick, crack, or crushed spot in the jacket, and dry leaves sitting on a warm cord are fuel. The fix is not a fancier cover. It is to keep the cord out in the open, keep it dry, and make sure it is heavy enough for the load and the distance in the first place.
Most people cover a cord because it looks better or because they want it out of the way. The safer answer to both is a cord that is the right gauge for the run, so it stays cool and you do not have to hide a warm one. Why a covered cord runs hot
A cord's amp rating is not a fixed property of the copper. It is the current the cord can carry while shedding its own heat to the air around it. Take a common outdoor cord: a 16-gauge cord is typically listed at 13 amps, about 1,625 watts (a UL-listed 16-gauge cord marked 125 volts, 13 amps). Run a modest display through it and do the math:
Display load = 10 A
Watts = 10 A × 120 V = 1,200 W
Share of the cord's 13 A rating = 10 ÷ 13 ≈ 77%
At 77 percent of its rating the cord is already working, and it is designed to run there only because it is losing that heat to open air. Pile leaves or mulch over it and you take away the cooling the 13-amp rating assumed. The temperature climbs, the insulation softens, and a spot that was fine in the open becomes a spot that fails. The National Electrical Code (NEC) treats this same effect for permanent wiring: a conductor's ampacity is reduced when heat cannot get away from it, which is why the flexible-cord ampacities in NEC Article 400 (Table 400.5) assume the cord is not bundled or buried. A cord under leaves is the household version of that derating, except nobody applied it.
The cover hides the thing that starts fires
The second problem has nothing to do with heat. Cords take a beating in a yard: they get stepped on, run over by a wheelbarrow, chewed, pinched under a gate, and cracked by the cold. A visible cord shows you the damage. A cord under a foot of leaves does not, and a nicked conductor arcing against damp ground or a staple is exactly how a slow fire starts in a spot nobody is looking at. Decorations are a real ignition source, not a hypothetical one: the National Fire Protection Association tracks home structure fires that begin with decorations and with decorative lighting every year, and a damaged cord hidden under a pile of leaves is a textbook way to add one to that count. Bright orange cord laid where you can see it is a safety feature. Hiding it defeats the feature.
What to do instead
- Leave the cord in the open and route it along edges. Run it against the base of the house, along a fence line, or beside a walkway rather than across the middle of the yard. It disappears visually without being buried.
- Where a cord crosses a path, use a rated cord cover. A low-profile cord protector made for the purpose shields the cord from foot and vehicle traffic while still letting it breathe. That is a different thing from smothering it in mulch.
- Keep connections up and dry. The plug-to-plug junction is the weak point outdoors. Elevate it on a stake, add a drip loop, and use a weatherproof connection cover so it never sits in wet leaves.
- Use only outdoor-rated cord, and size it to the run. A cord that is heavy enough for the load and the distance runs cool, which is the whole reason you were tempted to hide a warm one.
- Never bury a standard cord. Extension cords are for temporary use above ground. A permanently buried outdoor circuit is a job for direct-burial cable in conduit, installed by a licensed electrician, not an orange cord under mulch.

- Do not cover a cord with leaves, mulch, a rug, or a mat. Covering traps heat and hides damage, and both cause fires.
- A cord's amp rating assumes open-air cooling. Take the air away and the rating no longer holds.
- Route it in the open, protect crossings with a rated cover, keep connections dry.
- Size the cord so it runs cool. The right gauge for the load and distance is the real fix.
- Anything permanent belongs underground in conduit, installed by a licensed electrician.

The 16-gauge cord rating of 13 amps matches the flexible-cord ampacity for 16 AWG with two current-carrying conductors in NEC Table 400.5(A)(1); 13 amps at 125 volts is about 1,625 watts, the value also printed on typical UL-listed 16-gauge cords (2026).
