Adoption details
Indiana's operative code is the Indiana Electrical Code codified in 675 IAC, historically based on the 2008 NEC for commercial work with a newer edition referenced for residential. Rulemaking to adopt a 2023-NEC-based Indiana Electrical Code is in progress but not finalized as of mid-2026. The enforceable edition is whatever is currently codified in 675 IAC.
The AHJ decides. Always verify locally
State adoption sets the baseline, not the final word. Cities and counties can layer amendments on top of the state code, run behind or ahead of the state's edition, or, in local-adoption states, enforce a different edition entirely. The enforceable code for any project is whatever the authority having jurisdiction issuing the permit says it is. Confirm the edition and local amendments with the AHJ before design or bid. Adoption status also changes on state rulemaking cycles; this page reflects reconciled adoption-tracker data as of July 6, 2026.
