Is It Safe to Run an Extension Cord Through a Window or Door for Halloween?
Not the way it is usually done. Snaking a cord out through a window or door and letting the sash or the door close on it crushes the insulation a little more every time it is opened and shut, and that slow damage is exactly how a hidden short or a fire gets started. There is a second problem people miss: a cord fed from an indoor outlet skips the ground-fault protection your outdoor outlets are required to have, so a wet decoration is no longer backed up by a GFCI. The right fix is an outdoor GFCI receptacle. If you do not have one, a licensed electrician can add one, and that is a far better answer than a cord in a windowsill.

Why the window or door is the problem, not the cord
An extension cord is built to be flexible, not to be clamped. Close a window sash or a door on it and the jacket takes a concentrated squeeze in one spot. Do that once and it may be fine. Do it every evening for a month, opening and shutting the door as people come and go, and the insulation works-hardens, cracks, and finally exposes the copper inside. At that point the two conductors can touch and short, or a person touching the crushed spot can be shocked. Fire investigators have traced house fires to exactly this: a cord run through an active doorway that was damaged by repeated use.
Weatherstripping makes it worse, not better. It looks like a soft cushion, but it clamps the cord tightly enough to trap heat and hold moisture against the jacket, and it hides the damage from view.
The GFCI you give up
Outdoor outlets at a house are required to be protected by a ground-fault circuit interrupter, the outlet or breaker that cuts power the instant a small current leaks to ground through water or a person. When you run a cord from an ordinary indoor outlet, usually one without GFCI protection, out to a wet yard, you have moved the load outdoors but left its safety device behind. A rain-soaked plug or a cracked fog machine that a GFCI would have caught in an instant now has nothing watching it. What to do instead
- Use an outdoor GFCI receptacle. If your house has a weatherproof outlet outside, that is what it is for. If it does not, having a licensed electrician add one is the real fix and it lasts for every holiday after this one.
- If you must pass a cord through temporarily, use a flat pass-through cord. Thin, flat cords are made to lie under a closed window or door without being crushed. Treat it as a short-term measure, not the plan for the season, and take it up when the display comes down.

- Never pinch, staple, or bury the cord. No door or window closed on it, no staples through the jacket, nothing run under a rug or a doormat where heat and damage hide.
A plain worked example: sizing the cord you should use
Say your display adds up to 8 amps and the nearest proper outlet is a 75-foot run away. The question is whether the cord can carry 8 amps that far without overheating or losing enough voltage to dim the lights.
Display load: 8 A
16-gauge cord rating: about 13 A (drops below that past 25 ft)
14-gauge cord rating: about 15 A
Over 75 ft, step up to 14-gauge → ampacity margin and less voltage drop
On amperage alone a 16-gauge cord looks fine for 8 amps, but a long run eats voltage and pushes a thin cord toward its limit, so the heavier 14-gauge is the safer call over 75 feet. When to call an electrician
If there is no weatherproof outlet where you need one, that is the moment to bring in a licensed electrician rather than improvise with a window and a cord. Adding an outdoor GFCI receptacle is a common, affordable job, and it removes the whole pinched-cord problem for good.
