Can You Run an Extension Cord Across a Driveway for Halloween?
You can, but three things have to be true first: the cord is rated for outdoor use, it is protected where cars and trick-or-treaters cross it, and it is plugged into a GFCI outlet. A cord run across a driveway takes abuse that a cord along a wall never sees, so the goal is to keep it from getting pinched, tripped over, or soaked. Get those right and size the cord for the distance, and a driveway crossing is safe for the season.

Use an outdoor-rated cord
The cord jacket has to be built for weather. Look for a W in the type marking on the cord (for example SJTW), which means it is rated for outdoor use, and for a listing mark from a recognized testing lab. An indoor cord run outside gets brittle and cracks, and a driveway adds crushing from tires on top of the rain, so an indoor cord is the wrong tool twice over. Never run a cord that is cut, cracked, or has a damaged plug; retire it.
Protect it where it crosses
The two real dangers at a driveway are a car crushing the cord and a person catching a foot on it in the dark. Handle both:
- Where tires cross, use a cord protector ramp. These are the low rubber or plastic humps with a channel down the middle that let a car roll over without pinching the cord. A pinched or repeatedly crushed cord can break a conductor inside the intact-looking jacket, which is how a cord starts a fire.
- Where people walk, get the cord flat and visible. Route it along an edge if you can. If it must cross a walking path, tape it down with a bright, weather-rated tape or use a floor cord cover so no one trips, especially once it is dark and crowded.
- Do not hide the cord under a rug, mat, or a pile of leaves. A covered cord cannot shed heat, and leaves are fuel. Keep it out in the open and protected, not buried under something flammable.
- Do not bury a standard cord in the ground. Ordinary extension cords are not made to be buried; soil moisture and damage lead to a fault. Permanent buried outdoor circuits use direct-burial cable installed to code, which is a licensed electrician's job, not a seasonal fix.
Keep it on a GFCI, and keep it dry
Every outdoor decoration should be plugged into a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet, the kind with TEST and RESET buttons, or fed from a GFCI breaker. A GFCI shuts power off in a fraction of a second if current starts leaking to a wet path, which is what protects a person standing on wet pavement from a shock. Raise the cord-to-cord and cord-to-decoration connections up off the ground on a brick or a hook, cover them with a weatherproof connector cover, and leave a drip loop so water runs off the cord before it reaches a plug. Size the cord for the run
A driveway crossing is often the longest cord in the yard, and a long cord that is too thin does two bad things: it loses voltage, which dims the display, and it runs warmer under load. Match the gauge to both the load and the distance. A lower gauge number is a thicker wire. As a rough guide, 16-gauge is fine for a short, light run; step up to 14- or 12-gauge for a long run or a heavier load like an inflatable or a fog machine.
Here is the difference gauge makes on a 50-foot driveway run pulling 10 amps:
16-gauge: 2 × 12.9 × 10 A × 50 ft ÷ 2,580 cmil = 5.0 V drop (4.2%)
14-gauge: 2 × 12.9 × 10 A × 50 ft ÷ 4,110 cmil = 3.14 V drop (2.6%)
Same 50 feet, same 10 amps, but the thicker 14-gauge cord loses under 3 percent while the 16-gauge loses over 4. The 12.9 is the copper resistance constant and the 2,580 and 4,110 are the wire cross-sections in circular mils from NEC Chapter 9, Table 8. One cord, not several chained together. Every added connection is another spot to trip over, another joint to get wet, and more voltage lost. If one cord will not reach, buy a single longer cord of the right gauge rather than joining two. The guide on chaining cords explains why.
Why it matters
This is not fussiness. Damaged and overloaded extension cords are a well-known cause of seasonal home fires, and fire-safety agencies flag decorative lighting every year as decorations go up. A crushed cord under a tire, a wet connection on the pavement, or a thin cord run too far are exactly the conditions those fires come from, and every one of them is avoidable with the steps above. When a run is hard to protect, the safer answer is to move the display or add a properly installed outdoor outlet, not to accept a cord in a bad spot.
