Can I Put a Bigger Fuse in My Halloween Lights?
No. Do not fit a larger fuse in a light-string plug, ever. The fuse is sized to protect the thin cord in the string, and it is meant to blow before that cord can overheat. Swap in a bigger one and you remove the protection: the wire is now free to carry far more current than it can safely shed as heat, which is how a decorated house catches fire. If a fuse keeps blowing, the answer is always to reduce the load or fix the fault, never to raise the fuse. Match every replacement to the exact rating stamped on the old fuse.

The fuse protects the wire, not the lights
It is easy to think the fuse is there to protect the bulbs. It is not. It protects the cord. Holiday mini-light strings are built on very thin wire, commonly 22-gauge, and that wire can only carry so much current before it heats up. The plug fuse, usually 3 amps at 125 volts, is chosen so it melts and cuts the power the moment the current climbs past what that thin cord can handle. This is the same idea as the breaker in your panel, which protects your house wiring, scaled down to a fuse the size of a grain of rice protecting a cord the thickness of a shoelace. Underwriters Laboratories requires that fuse on listed seasonal light strings for exactly this reason.
What a bigger fuse actually does
A bigger fuse does not fix anything. It just raises the current at which the power gets cut, and the wire cannot be upgraded to match. So the overload that was blowing the 3-amp fuse now keeps flowing, heating the thin cord, softening its insulation, and building toward a fire, with nothing left to stop it. The fuse was the last line of defense, and a bigger one moves that line past the point the wire can survive.
Worked example: the numbers behind the warning
UL-listed strings on 22-gauge wire are rated for up to 210 watts of lights connected end to end. On a 120-volt outlet that is the design load in amps:
210 W ÷ 120 V = 1.75 amps, the most current the thin cord is built for
3-amp fuse: sits just above that, with headroom for the cold-bulb inrush
10-amp fuse: allows 10 A, about 5.7 times the cord's design load
Put those figures in terms of light strings. A 100-count incandescent set draws about 0.34 amps, so a 3-amp fuse blows at roughly nine strings chained together, which is already past the safe limit and doing its job. Fit a 10-amp fuse and it would not blow until about twenty-nine strings, near 1,200 watts, are stacked on a cord rated for 210. Long before that fuse ever acted, the wire would be running dangerously hot. The fuse rating and the cord are a matched pair, and the number stamped on the fuse is the number the cord was designed around.
What to do when a fuse keeps blowing
A fuse that keeps blowing is information, not an obstacle. Work through the cause instead of overriding it:
- Count your strings. If the fuse blows only once you have chained several sets together, you are over the limit. Split the display and feed part of it from another outlet on a different circuit.
- Inspect a string that blows alone. A single set that blows a fresh fuse by itself has a short or damaged wire. Check the whole length for crushed insulation, water in a socket, or a missing bulb, and retire the string if you find damage.
- Switch to LED. LED strings draw a small fraction of the current, so far more of them fit under the same cord limit, and the overload disappears.
- Replace like for like. When you do change a fuse, match the exact amps and voltage on the old one. Spares are usually taped inside the packaging and sold cheaply.

Seasonal light strings are listed under UL 588, which requires the plug fuse. The 210-watt cord limit and the per-string wattage here are typical published UL and manufacturer values for common incandescent mini sets, not code table values, so the ratings printed on your own strings and the tag at the plug are what govern.
